BMW i8 Concept Spyder

After successful initial testing of the concept vehicle, the decision
for a production vehicle was quickly made. The BMW i8 Concept Spyder is the future of
the BMW vision EfficientDynamics concept and what we get is the
the most efficient and innovative sports car of its time. A sneak peek of the
concept car was featured in Mission Impossible 4 in which the car was driven by
Tom Cruise .The car looked stunning and some of it’s concept features were
shown. Its innovative plug-in hybrid concept combines the electric drive system from the BMW i3 Concept
– fitted over its front axle – with a high-performance three-cylinder
combustion engine producing 164 kW/220 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at the rear.
Working together, they allow the two drive systems to work at full potential,
thus delivering the performance of a sports car but at the same time fuel
consumption of a small car.
Speed 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is achieved under five seconds combined
with fuel consumption in the European cycle of 2.7 litres per 100 kilometres
(approx. 104 mpg imp) are figures currently beyond the capability of any
vehicle powered by a combustion engine of comparable performance. With the
eDrive technology and its large lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from
a domestic power supply, the BMW i8 Concept Spyder can travel up to 35 kilometres
(approx. 20 miles) on electric power alone. Now coming to the seating, the 4 seater offers enough space for four people making it practical for everyday
use.
It has a pair of electric scooters placed under a transparent
tailgate, a camera-based proactive collision warning feature, and the inside of
the car can be pre-warmed on a cold morning so it's all cozy and warm when you
go on a drive.
The LifeDrive architecture of the BMW i8 Spyder delivers extreme performance
and superb driving dynamics. The motor in the front axle module and combustion
engine at the rear are connected by an "energy tunnel", which houses
the high-voltage battery thus giving the car a low centre of gravity and this brings
with it improved dynamics. The engineering behind the weight is incredible. The positioning
of the electric motor and engine over their respective axles and the
space-saving and well-balanced packaging of all components results in a optimal
50/50 weight distribution.

Top 5 iPhone Apps For Your Car

1.iGasUp
Fuel prices have become a point of concern recently. As recently as November 2011, the price of crude oil topped $100. But no matter how bad gas prices get, you can always find the lowest prices, no matter where you are, with iGasUp.For just $2.99, iPhone users can download the iGasUp application and have updated gas station locations and fuel prices at their fingertips. The app gives users the 10 closest gas stations based on the phone's current location. iGasUp uses information derived from Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) the same entity that provides price data for AAA, Sirius Satellite Radio and GPS companies such as Garmin.
2.Trapster
This app gives you freedom from speed traps. If you have an iPhone, you won't have to rely on these visual signals from other drivers. With Trapster, you can scan your area for any known speed traps, police hang outs, speed cameras and even stop-light cameras.Trapster displays your location on a map using the iPhone's WiFi location capabilities. Reported speed traps, which users enter into the Trapster's network database, pop up along your route. Trapster's settings allow users to setup their iPhones to give voice alerts of approaching speed traps and the dynamic radar feature compensates for a driver's speed and direction in radar to relay accurate warnings. Signal cameras and police traps show up on the display as icons for easy recognition.
3.INRIX Traffic
Even if your car has a GPS with built-in traffic information, you might find that the INRIX Traffic app can help you plan your route in ways that your GPS can't. To access the more advanced route-planning services that the INRIX Traffic app offers, you'll need to pay $24.99 to upgrade to INRIX Traffic premium, but even the basic free app gives you a sufficient amount of traffic information for your daily travelling or just for a trip across town.
4.Parker for iPhone
This app helps in parking your car on a busy day very easily. It gives you a rooftop view of the local street situation and tells you where the parking places are. With the cooperation of the Departments of Transportation in several major cities, including New York, Dallas, Los Angeles and Boston, the San Francisco company Streetline has installed electronic sensors in selected neighborhoods to detect whether parking places are occupied or empty. This data is broadcast to a central location and can be accessed via the Parker app.
5.Craftsman Garage Door App
If you have a garage then you have a garage door opener, a remote control device that you can use to open and close your garage door from inside your car or even inside your house. But most garage door openers require that you be somewhere close to the garage before they'll work. Craftsman's garage door opener is different. It will work from any place you can get an iPhone signal.
But you'll need the Craftsman AssureLink Internet Connected DC Chain Drive Garage Door Opener installed on your garage door, and that's going to cost you more than $200. But the app itself is free. It's up to you to decide whether this service is worth the cost to you, but at least the Assure Link Garage Door Opener has other features, such as a keyless entry pad and a 10-year warranty on its motor, even apart from the convenience of the app. And maybe you were already planning to replace your aging garage door hardware.

How Mercedes Benz Logo Originated

When the patented name "Mercedes" was registered in September 1902 Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft had a successful brand name but still lacked a characteristic trademark. Then Paul and Adolf Daimler - the company founder’s two sons, and now in charge of the business - remembered that their father had once used a star as a symbol.
Gottlieb Daimler had been technical director of the Deutz gas engine factory from 1872 until 1881. At the beginning of his employment there, he had marked a star above his own house on a picture postcard of Cologne and Deutz, and had written to his wife that this star would one day shine over his own factory to symbolize prosperity.
The DMG board immediately accepted the proposal and in June 1909, both three-pointed and four-pointed stars were registered as trademarks. Although both designs were legally protected, only the three-pointed star was used. From 1910 onwards it began to appear at the front of the cars as a design feature on the radiator.
The three-pointed star was supposed to symbolize Daimler’s ambition of universal motorization – “on land, on water and in the air”. Over the years, various small additions were made. In 1916, the points were surrounded by a circle, in which four small stars and the word Mercedes were integrated, or alternatively the names of the DMG plants at Untertürkheim or Berlin-Marienfelde.
In November 1921, DMG applied for legal protection of utility patents for any new variations on their trademark and lodged with the patent office a three-dimensional three-pointed star enclosed in a circle – which included the design intended for use on the radiator grille. It became a registered trademark in August 1923.
The period of inflation after the First World War meant a difficult time for sales – especially of luxury goods such as passenger cars – and had serious repercussions on the automobile industry. Only financially strong companies with well-established models were able to survive – although even these were forced into mergers and co-operative ventures. It was in this way that the former rivals, DMG and Benz & Cie., formed a syndicate in 1924 in order to standardize design and production, as well as purchasing, sales and advertising, and thereby remain competitive.
During this period, the two firms generally marketed their products jointly, although still under separate trademarks. Two years later, in June 1926, the two oldest motor manufacturers merged to form Daimler-Benz AG.
At this point a new trademark was designed, which brought together the main characteristics of both the existing emblems – the world renowned three-pointed star belonging to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was surrounded with its trade name ‘Mercedes’ as well as that of the equally famous name ‘Benz’, whose laurel wreath entwined the two names together.
This trademark, which has changed little over the decades, still adorns Mercedes-Benz vehicles and has come to represent quality and safety on roads everywhere. And throughout the world the name Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with tradition, innovation and the future of the automobile.

6.1994 Acura Integra
7.1999 Chevrolet Pickup (Full Size)
8.2004 Dodge Pickup (Full Size)

10.1994 Nissan Sentra
The singling out of the 1994
Honda Accord as the most-stolen car in the United States last year isn’t
something new. The 1994 Accord again tops the list, making this it's
fourth consecutive appearance. The 1994 Accord’s lack of security features and its
popularity as the main reasons why the car is so frequently stolen.
Number
two on the list is also a Honda, the 1998 Honda Civic. At No. three is the 2006
Ford F-150 pickup, which is a truck (ranked so high on the most-stolen list)
.Two other full-size pickups, the 1999 Chevrolet pickup and the 2004 Dodge
pickup, came in at position number seven and eight, respectively. The 2002 Ford
Explorer SUV is ranked ninth.
Fourth place belongs to the 1991 Toyota Camry, another best-selling
sedan. Two other sedans, the 1994 Acura Integra and the 1994 Nissan Sentra,
ranked in sixth and 10th place. The Dodge Caravan, the only minivan on the
list, was the fifth most-stolen vehicle last year across the nation.
Aston Martin Vanquish

Vanquish production was ceased in 2007 and while its DBS replacement was more reliable, it never recaptured the Vanquish's glamour quotient. Aston Martin hopes the new Vanquish will generate and bring back the lost glamour. The Vanquish's new interior is amazing, and the main controls on the centre console are now touch sensitive. Fit and finish is classic, although it seems that almost everything really stylish inside this car is a rather costly option. Touch-sensitive glass buttons vibrate when your finger makes contact, while the new Garmin sat-navigation and properly integrated infotainment system are light years ahead of the DBS with its clunky navigation set-up and fussy stereo controls. . No-one can match Aston for interior design and ambience, though the One-77 style ‘quartic' steering wheel and frowning air vents are both an acquired. But the ZF six-speed auto is not as efficient compared to the ultra-fast systems fitted by McLaren orFerrari. The coachwork is sleek and stretched, although all modern Astons look quite similar.
The Vanquish borrows styling from the One-77 supercar. It also gets a pedestrian impact-friendly front, LED rear lamps and a lovely, seamless transition from the rear arches into the roof. A slightly more compact grille is surrounded by a flowing, bare carbon front splitter, bonnet vents and LED running lights, while protruding side strakes extend down the sides. At the rear you’ll find LED tail-lamps inspired by the One-77 and an integrated spoiler that looks more like a sculpture than an aerodynamic aid.
Originally the 5.9-litre V12 was based on two Ford Mondeo V6s, but Aston has reworked on it . There is a 9% increase in power from the DBS to 565bhp and the car has a top speed of 183mph, 0-62 mph in 4.1sec. The rich, multi-layered V12 exhaust note is superb especially when you hit the Sport button on the steering wheel. New launch control also allows you to experience the full 565bhp. Simply push the button marked L/C and move your foot from the brake to full throttle and, after a moment’s pause, the car roars off, with minimum wheel spin and maximum acceleration. A quicker steering ratio means the Vanquish feels more alert, more of the time, while the wheel weights up beautifully as you load up the outside wheel in corners. The most noticeable dynamic change, though, comes from the three-stage adaptive dampers, which give the car a broader character than before. Normal mode is surprisingly supple, rounding off sharp jolts like speed bumps with confidence. Sport mode noticeably firms things up and works well when you’re darting down a smooth country road. Track mode is best left for just that – it’s too firm for normal roads. Despite the full carbon fibre skin, plus carbon on parts of the chassis, the Vanquish only weighs 1kg less than the DBS. Any savings are cancelled out by extras like the new infotainment system and bigger carbon-ceramic brakes. The new Vanquish is priced at £189,995 which is quite expensive for an Aston.

5 Amazing Car Security Systems
06:28
No comments
OnStar
OnStar may have the strongest advertising
presence of any car security solution on the market. GM has successfully
telegraphed the unique benefits of OnStar in its commercial campaigns: Much
like the advertisements for Broadview Home Security, which feature its operators
standing by to assist homeowners who've been burglarized, OnStar ads commonly
depict helpful operators contacting drivers after an accident. But how does
OnStar work, exactly?
OnStar systems operate over a digital cellular network in the
United States, and its customers can contact the service 24 hours a day with
the push of a button in their cars. Lost on some country back road? Connect
with an advisor, and he or she will give you turn-by-turn directions to get you
home. That's one element of OnStar's "three-button system" for
communication. With an accompanying plan or pre-paid package of minutes, OnStar
also provides hands-free calling with the push of the second button. The third
button places an emergency call directly to an OnStar "Advisor."
In a real emergency, such as a car crash, air bag sensors or
other sensors built into an OnStar-equipped vehicle can automatically alert an
operator to the condition and location of a vehicle, which OnStar then uses to
direct emergency responders. But that's an awful lot about emergencies; when it
comes to plain old security, OnStar's pretty impressive, too. OnStar can unlock
your car if you lose your keys or honk your horn if you're lost in the vast sea
of a parking deck; the system tracks stolen cars via GPS, and operators can block the ignition of
newer models and remotely slow them down during high-speed chases.
OnStar is far more than just a security system -- it's more of a
comprehensive service system, and its mobile apps for iPhone and Android make
features like remote door unlocking even easier. Comprehensive comes with a
cost, of course -- in OnStar's case, that means $199 a year for a basic
"Safe & Sound" plan or $299 a year for the "Directions &
Connections" plan, which adds in turn-by-turn navigation.
LoJack
LoJack
is one of the most famous examples of car security that uses radio tracking to hunt down and recover
stolen vehicles. Most tracking devices share the same principal: Small
transceivers are hidden somewhere inside the car and can be tracked by an
outside source tuned to the proper frequency. Because GPS receivers
require line-of-sight to an orbiting satellite to acquire a positioning fix,
systems like the LoJack have the advantage of tracking cars in some places GPS
will fail.
Due to close ties with law enforcement organizations, LoJack
homing devices actually show up in police computer systems. LoJack units are
tied to a car's unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN),
so when a car is reported stolen and the VIN is entered into the state police
crime computer, that automatically triggers the LoJack Unit in the vehicle
[source: Lojack].
And LoJack stands by its product with a 24-hour recovery
guarantee. Basically, if your car is stolen and can't be found within 24 hours,
you get your money back -- for the LoJack, anyway [source:Lojack].
The downside to LoJack's police partnership is that the recovery system is only
good in certain countries in the United States -- and it's
expensive. The basic version of LoJack costs $695, but owning one could
potentially save you up to 35 percent on automobile insurance [source:Lojack].
Commando FM-870
Did
your car come with a keychain pager, a small device that lets you lock or
unlock your car doors from afar? They're a basic accessory for new cars and
provide convenient ways to make sure your doors are always locked. The Commando
FM-870 is a souped-up keychain pager. It can unlock car doors without a key and
start the engine remotely from 2,500 feet (762 meters)
away. The Commando includes a small device with an LCD display that monitors
doors and trunks open/closed and can detect hard impacts to your vehicle
[source:Commando].
Forced entry or engine startup will trigger an alert to the
Command FM-870's LCD display. In addition to its remote start and keyless entry
functions, the Commando component that's installed in the vehicle also includes
a car alarm that can be programmed to trigger
based on unauthorized vehicle access. The multi-function Commando FM-870 sells
for $169.99 on Commando's Web site. The installation process for the Commando
requires some manual wiring so make sure you or someone you know is capable of
installing it before making a purchase. While
the Commando FM-870's LCD-equipped remote helps it stand out from the crowd,
it's far from the only multi-function security system on the market.
CobraTrak
5
Cobra's
ConraTrak 5 takes the benefits of several disparate Cobra security systems and
bundles them together into one powerful system, which earned it a Category 5
placement in the Thatcham system, which means it must effectively help you
recover the vehicle if it's stolen [source: Thatcham]. That means the
CobraTrak 5 system, which Cobra calls one of its "top of range
systems," features vehicle tracking that works in a very unique way.
An automatic driver recognition (ADR) system forms a link
between your car and a card you carry on your person. If the card is outside
the car, the ADR system is armed and instantly alerts Cobra's operating center
if the car is moved. If a thief somehow makes off with your keys but doesn't
grab the ADR card, they're toast: The ADR system will be aware that the card
isn't in the vehicle with the car thief. Cobra can also initiate remote engine immobilization. Once a stolen car has
been shut off, it won't turn on again. Coupled with GPS tracking, remote engine
immobilization increases the chances that police will be able to find and
recover a stolen vehicle [source:Cobra].
This is a high-end, pricey security system for car owners who
live in Europe. Cobra charges £649 ($1,050) for the system, plus £199 ($322)
for an annual monitoring fee [source:Cobra].
If that sounds too rich for your blood, check out our next form of car
security. It may not come with GPS tracking or remote engine immobilization,
but it will make it a whole lot harder for a carjacker to sell your stolen
vehicle to an underground chop shop.
Nissan
Vision 2015
The goal of Nissan's Vision 2015 project
is to develop new car concepts and technologies through the year 2015. Some of
those new technologies are aimed at reducing the deaths and injuries caused by
motor vehicle accidents. One of Nissan's Vision 2015 concept cars embodies that
goal to the fullest, integrating advanced technology into a car to prevent drunk driving accidents -- and drunk driving, period
[source:DUI.com].
Sensors in the car's seat and gearshift
can detect alcohol through the
driver's perspiration and prevent the vehicle from being driven. Additionally,
a camera watches the driver's eyes. If it detects signs of drowsiness or
drunkenness, the car issues a voice alert to the driver and tightens the seat
belt as a wake-up call [source:DUI.com].
The car can even detect suspicious driving activity that could indicate someone
falling asleep at the wheel -- drift out of the lane and the car may give you
the same alert and seat belt tuck [source:DUI.com].
While its futuristic concept car may not
be hitting the highways just yet, Nissan's already incorporated a drunk driving
message into its current navigation systems [source:DUI.com].
In another decade, Nissan's vision may be an everyday reality, and car security
systems will be as good at keeping us safe from ourselves as they are preventing
outside threats.
